The challenge of parenting

None of us are given lessons in parenting and unfortunately our children do not arrive with a manual! We have to learn as we go along and we generally do this really well. Most parents get to know their own child better than anyone else in the world.
However, because of the complex, busy lives we lead today we often feel as parents that we are ‘not getting it right’ - especially when we are faced with parenting challenges which leave us feeling lost, powerless and exhausted trying to cope. Sometimes, when problems are close to you and are having such a big impact on your family, it can be difficult to see a way out.

offers support and coaching to parents - advising them on the most successful and positive ways of raising happy, confident kids and, most importantly, in a way that parents find practical and sustainable.

Dr. Juliet Shand BSc. (Hons), ClinPsyD, CPsychol

I have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and more than 15 years experience of working in the NHS as a Psychologist. I have worked extensively with children and their families. Over the years I have developed a particular passion for working with families experiencing difficulties with their children’s bedtime routine and sleep, and helping parents manage their children’s behaviour. I have carried out research on the effects of parental separation on children and I have worked with families to minimise the impact of family break ups. I also have an interest in the field of Positive Psychology which looks at the strengths that enable individuals and communities to thrive and to reach their full potential. Positive psychologists seek to find and nurture strengths, and to make the lives of all individuals more fulfilling not simply to treat mental illness.

Dr. Matthew Johnson BSc. (Hons), Ph.D., ClinPsyD, CPsychol

I have a PhD in Psychology which investigated ‘Parenting Stress in Recent Fathers’ and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I have 9 years experience of working in the NHS as a Psychologist and have worked extensively with children and young people, including those with learning and physical disabilities. I have a particular interest in working with the families of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

I am a co author of “Ask a Parenting Expert”, a practical question and answer book for parents which has been published internationally

Most importantly, we are both working parents of young children who understand the complexity and demands of juggling family life.

    • Tantrums and challenging behaviours
    • Sleep problems and bedtime routines
    • Difficulties associated with Autistic Spectrum Disorders
    • Children who are bullying or being bullied
    • Sibling rivalry

    • Childhood depression
    • Helping children cope with major changes at school or at home
    • Helping parents agree on strategies to deal with their children and gain more time together as a couple
    • Coping with a parent’s illness or the death of a loved one
    • Living with disabilities or chronic illnesses
    • Divorce, family separation and new partners
